Location: Austin, Texas
Dish: Mac and Cheese
On a recent work trip to Austin, N.S. and I decided we really needed some cheesy goodness to round out the trip. We’d already experienced our fair share of meat sweats from delicious BBQ and were looking for something different. We stopped in to Péché on West 4th Street and ordered the mac and cheese, which definitely had a twist to it.
The dish itself was presented well — in a rustic, mini cast-iron skillet. At first glance, it looked delicious. The orecchiette pasta was covered in gruyere and grana padano cheeses and well toasted (my fave), but the surprise was when you dug in and got a piece of duck confit. I have to admit, it was certainly intriguing and the flavor was a surprise. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either. Admittedly, I’m a picky eater so take that with a grain of salt. But man, do I love mac’n’cheese. Everything about this dish was great, and I didn’t mind the duck confit, I just got tired of it after a few bites.
